WALKERA V120D05-V2 discussion/review

Before I start with the review, I would like to compliment EHIROBO on their excellent service. Shopping with them is safe, and shipment is fast. Not only are their helicopters well priced, but EHIROBO's after sales service are outstanding, and their technical team are always willing to give you a helping hand no matter what.

First Impression

When I lifted the Walkera V120D01-V2 out of the box I noticed four opening vents on the canopy. It looks a bit strange, but gives adjustment access to the receiver pots with out removing the canopy. Overall, the helicopter looks great with its red and black streamline canopy. The helicopter is well package in a carton box to ensure that no damage will occur when shipped.

Technical and Designing Review

You can purchase the Walkera V120D05-V2 as a ready to fly kit that includes the WK-2603 transmitter, or without the transmitter. If you already have a WK-2801 Pro transmitter, you only have to purchase the helicopter. The RX-2615V receiver of the Walkera V120D05-V2  will bind with the WK-2801 Pro transmitter.  The Walkera V120D01-V2 has foam main rotor blades that are very efficient and not that expensive to replace if needed. You can always upgrade to carbon fiber main blades, but the foam blades works really well. The rotor head, blade grips and swash are CNC machined out of red anodized aluminum. The mainframe, battery tray and landing skids are moulded out of plastic. Two ball bearings are imbedded in the plastic mainframe, and ensures for smooth running of the main shaft.

The Walkera V120D01-V2 utilizes the WK-WS-15-001 12000kv brushless motor and 20A WK-WST-20A-L speed controller to power up this helicopter. Three digital WK-02-1 servos are connected to the swash for cyclic control, and one digital WK-03-4 servo for the tail. A tail servo bracket secures the tail servo on the metal tail boom, and can be moved forward or backwards if needed. Two graphite tail boom struts are screwed to the landing skids and plastic horizontal tail boom fin for extra support.

The tail rotor is driven by a belt that runs inside the tail boom. A carbon fiber vertical tai fin protects the tail rotor from hitting the ground when spinning. Two ball bearings in the metal tail rotor hub ensures for smooth running of the tail rotor shaft. The tail rotors are plastic, and the tail rotor blade holders are aluminum. The battery tray for the 3.7V 850mAh LiPo battery situated below the receiver. The LiPo battery slides into position from the front, so the canopy needs to be removed every time to replace the LiPo battery.

The Walkera V120D05-V2 is a 120 size 3D capable helicopter that utilizes the 3-axis gyro and flybarless balance control system and ensures for stable flight in normal mode and stunt mode. All three the gyros are incorporated on the RX-2615V receiver. The aileron and elevator gyro sensitivity can be adjusted on the receiver, while the tail gyro gain is adjusted remotely on the transmitter. The signal control speed from the elevator and aileron servo can be adjusted on the receiver with the Balance Delay pot. The amounts of movement for the elevator, aileron and tail servos can be adjusted with the servo extend pots on the receiver.

The Walkera V120D05-V2 has a beautiful red and black plastic canopy that fits perfectly with the LiPo battery installed. Four opening vents on top of the canopy allows airflow over the ESC and brushless motor for extra cooling during flight.  The overall quality of the Walkera V120D05-V2 is very good.

WALKERA V120D05-V2 Setup

There is no setup needed if you buy the Walkera V120D05-V2 helicopter with the WK-2603 Transmitter. A complete helicopter setup is done at the Walkera factory, so all you need to do is to fine-tune the default settings to suite your flying skills. I'm using my own WK-2801PRO Transmitter to fly my Walkera V120D05-V2. Click Here to view my WK-2801PRO Transmitter settings. On the video below, my receiver pot settings are as follow:

• RUDDER EXT: 50%
• ELEV AILE EXT: 50%
• AILE GYRO: 40%
• ELEV GYRO: 40%
• BAL DELAY: 20%

It is always good practice to give any new RC helicopter a thorough pre-flight inspection before its first flight. Make sure that all the screws are tight and that the main motor gear messing with the main gear is set correctly. Also check that the main rotor blade tracking is 100% in line.

Flying the WALKERA V120D05-V2

The default factory receiver setting for the Walkera V120D05-V2 is setup for normal flight only. If you want to fly loops and rolls, you need to adjust the aileron and elevator gyro sensitivity, as well as the balance delay on the receiver. My receiver settings above are pretty much setup correctly to loop the Walkera V120D01-V2 effortless. This helicopter is very silent during flight. I found the Walkera V120D05-V2 very stable in normal flight and stunt mode. The flybarless balance system with its three gyros works very well.

I have tried to fly the helicopter in normal flight without the elevator and aileron gyro (flight mode switch on the receiver in the off position), but the helicopter is very unstable and almost uncontrollable. With the flight mode switch in the on position, all three gyros balance the helicopter perfectly, which makes it a pleasure to fly. Transition into forward flight is smooth and executed effortless. There is no nose up or down pitching tendencies when rolling out of a bank. Tail movements are crisp, and pirouette speed can be adjusted with gyro gain adjustments on the transmitter. The tail gyro is solid with no signs of tail wagging during flight.

The Walkera V120D01-V2 will fly about nine minutes in normal flight mode on the 3.7V 850mAh Li-Po Battery. I have set my transmitter alarm timer to five minutes for 3D flight. This helicopter is not designed for beginners. S if you have previous collective pitch helicopter experience, you will love this little R/C helicopter.
