WALKERA V120D02S  discussion/review

Before I start with the review, I would like to compliment EHIROBO on their excellent service. Shopping with them is safe, and shipment is fast. Not only are their helicopters well priced, but EHIROBO's after sales service are outstanding, and their technical team are always willing to give you a helping hand no matter what.

First Impression

It is evident that Walkera designed the Walkera V120D02S to be as durable and crash resistant as possible. The helicopter looks and feels solid. Before I purchased my Walkera V120D02S, I watched a video clip on YouTube where a guy is flying his helicopter several times into a wall on purpose to demonstrate it durability. Unfortunately the video was removed since then, otherwise I would have posted the video link on this review. This is an awesome looking mini 3D capable helicopter.

Technical and Designing Review

The Walkera V120D02S is available as a RTF kit that includes the Devo 6, 7, 8 or 12-channel transmitter. If you have a Devo transmitter, you can also buy only the helicopter. Just make sure that you order the Walkera V120D02S helicopter with RX2622V-D receiver. As I mentioned before, the Walkera V120D02S was designed to be ultra durable. The main rotor blades are plastic, and not the usual fragile foam core blades.

The main rotor blade holders, rotor head, swash, mainframe and landing skids are all plastic. Not only are they strong, but also keep the total weight of the helicopter down. Three digital WK-02-1 servos are connected to the swash for cyclic and collective control. A 12000 KV brushless motor (WK-WS-15-001) and 20Amp speed controller (WK-WST-20A-L) gives the Walkera V120D02S sufficient power to perform 3D stunts. The main gear was also redesigned with larger tooth to prevent stripping of gears when the helicopter crashes.

A sophisticated three-axis gyro system is incorporated into the RX2622V-D receiver. What I like about the Walkera V120D02S is that the LiPo battery can be changed without removing the canopy like on previous 120 size Walkera helicopters. The battery slides into position from the back into the battery tray. The square graphite tail boom is supported with two graphite tail boom struts for extra strength. The tail rotor is driven via torque tube, and runs inside the tail boom on two ball bearings.

The torque tube and tail rotor gears have also been redesigned with larger tooth to make them more crash resistant. A WK-03-4 digital tail servo controls the tail rotor pitch, and is situated on the tail boom. The horizontal fin is plastic, while the vertical is fin laser cut out carbon fiber. Although the tail rotor assembly is plastic, it is strong enough to handle 3D maneuvers. The Walkera V120D02S is a great looking helicopter with its black and red plastic canopy.

Overall it is noticeable that Walkera gave this helicopter a lot of thought when they designed this little durable 3D capable helicopter. I personally like belt drive tail rotors over torque tube, but other than that, this helicopter deserves five stars from me.

WALKERA V120D02S Setup

There is no setup needed if you buy the RTF Walkera V120D02S helicopter with the Devo Transmitter. A complete helicopter setup is done at the Walkera factory, so all you need to do is to fine-tune the default settings to suite your flying skills. If you buy the helicopter only, the settings for all the Devo transmitters are included in the manual for fast and easy setup. Programming the Walkera V120D02S settings onto my Devo 8 transmitters was fast and easy.

It is always good practice to give any new RC helicopter a thorough pre-flight inspection before its first flight. Make sure that all the screws are tight and that the main motor gear messing with the main gear is set correctly. Also check that the main rotor blade tracking is 100% in line.

Flying the WALKERA V120D02S

I was very surprised on my first flight when no trimming was required. This helicopter flies very stable in hovering and forward flight. Of all my 120 size Walkera helicopters, the flybarless system of the RX-2622V-D receiver is the best up to date. I'm so impressed, I have ordered two RX-2622V-D receivers for my Walkera M120D01 and V120D05-V2.

For 3D flight you have to adjust the elev/aile gyro sensitivity and elev/aile extend pods on the receiver to suite your flying skills. My elev/aile gyro sensitivity is set to 45% and the elev/aile extend to 80%. These settings work well for me to perform 3D stunts. According to the manual, the Devo transmitter setting for the gyro has to be set on manual. I found the tail to be very loose and sensitive on the manual setting. I changed the gyro setting on my Devo 8 to automatic, and the tail is solid through out the whole flight.

The Walkera V120D02S flies very stable in wind and no wind conditions. That just shoe you how efficient the 3-axis gyro stabilization system works on this helicopter. Even in inverted flight, the gyro holds the tail solid without any drift. Pirouette speed is a bit slow with the gyro setting in the automatic mode, but rather slow than out of control. If Walkera keep on manufacturing new flybarless helicopters in the future like the Walkera V120D02S, they will become the most popular brand out there.

This helicopter is not for the beginner, but if you have previous experience, the Walkera V120D02S is a perfect inexpensive and durable helicopter to start 3D flying with. I get about six minutes of flight time when flying stunts, and eight minutes in normal mode. I absolutely love my little Walkera V120D02S.
