How to balance rotor blades

Balanced main rotor blades are very important and will have a great effect on the flight of the helicopter. Unbalanced rotor blades will lead to excessive vibration during flight. I’m going to show you a simple but effective procedure to balance the rotor blades, but I recommend proper blade balancing equipment for ultra precision.

What you need:
• One long bolt, two washers and two nuts.
• Trim tape.
• Two drinking glasses.

Bolt the two blades together at the blade root using the long bolt and two nuts. Take the drinking glasses and put them side by side with a gap between them so that the rotor blades can move freely between them. Place the rotor blades in the middle of the two glasses with the bolt acting as a pivot point on the rim of the glasses. If the blades do not stay horizontal, they are not balanced.

Having found the lightest blade we now add trim tape a bit at a time until the blades balance. The blades should stay in the horizontal position when balancing is complete. If you don’t have trim tape, you can use some thin sticky tape or sticker. Note that I have used a small piece of blue tape on the bottom side of my rotor blade.

If you find vibration on the tail rotor blades, the same procedure can be used to balance them. This method is cheap and effective, but as I said for ultra precision you need proper balancing equipment.
